DKNY is the fashion label started by Donna Karan, standing for Donna Karan New York. The Donna Karan Company began in 1984, when it was formed by Karan and her late husband Stephan Weiss. DKNY (with its focus on jeans, kids clothes and lifestyle essentials) was then formed from the original Donna Karan brand, five years later in 1989. The reason behind including New York as a part of the brand name was that it mirrors the feeling behind the brand’s designs - Karan says that it sets the pace and attitude behind the label, as they try to encapsulate the energy and spirit of the city. DKNY aims to be a brand for creative people who don’t know where the day will take them.

Donna Karan is a highly acclaimed fashion designer with her entire career spent in the industry, and who’s heritage ensured a keen interest in fashion – her father was a tailor, and her mother a model and fashion sales representative.
