Stephenson's Cottage and The Locomotion
Lilliput Lane L3281 - Stephenson's Cottage and The Locomotion

The Cottage

Built in the mid-eighteenth century as a miner's cottage, this modest whitewashed stone cottage is situated on the old Wylam Waggonway at Wylam in the Tyne Valley.

Humble it may be, but it has big 'pulling power', (if you pardon the pun!), because it is actually the birthplace of one of the world's most famous railway engineers - George Stephenson - who was born here on 9th June 1781.

Locomotion

This model comes complete with its very own miniature replica of George Stephenson's famous steam locomotive, Locomotion, which made its historic first journey in 1825; reaching speeds of 12-15 mph and covering nine miles in just under two hours - driven by Stephenson himself!

Locomotion is part of the National Railway Museum's historic collection and can be seen at the Darlington Railway Centre and Museum.

Locomotive Height: 6cm
