Tips and burning guidelines for getting the best from your Yankee Candle

Burning Tips

The first burn of your Yankee Candle is the most important for preventing tunneling. If the wax is not allowed to melt to the edge of the container then the candle will begin to tunnel on subsequent burns.

To help ensure a clean, even burn your candle should be burned for approximately 30 minutes for every 1cm in diameter; for example, a large jar is about 8cm in diameter and so should be burned for at least 4 hours to ensure the wax pool reaches the edge of the jar.

  • Burn for no more than 3-4 hours at a time.
  • Always keep candles in sight when in use. Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire such as furniture, drapes, books, paper, flammable materials, etc.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended. Extinguish candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep. Be sure the wick ember is no longer glowing.
  • Always burn candles in a well-ventilated room. Don’t burn too many candles in a small room or in a “tight” home where air exchange is limited.
  • Choose an area away from drafts, open air vents or ceiling fans. This will help avoid rapid burning and prevent flare-ups.
  • Candles, containers and wax can become hot when in use.
  • Always burn candles on a stable, heat resistant surface. This can help prevent heat damage to underlying surfaces and prevent glass containers from breaking.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Keep the wax pool free from wick and other debris at all times.
  • Never use a knife or sharp object to remove wax drippings from a glass holder. It might scratch, weaken, or cause the glass to break upon subsequent use.
  • Extinguish a candle if it repeatedly smokes, flickers, or the flame becomes too high. The candle isn’t burning properly. Cool, align and trim the wick, then check for drafts before relighting.
  • Never burn a candle all the way down. Extinguish flame if it comes too close to the container.
  • Extinguish the candle carefully, allow it to cool completely before touching or moving.
  • It is recommended to use a candle snuffer to extinguish a candle. Never use water as it can cause wax to splatter or glass to break.

Smoking Candles

Is your flame dancing? When a flame flickers too much; it can produce unwanted smoke which can be caused by:

  • The wick being too long
  • Drafts in the air

To ensure a clean burn extinguish your candle, trim the wick to 3mm and make sure it isn’t in direct line of any air currents – then simply relight and enjoy.

The 1cm Rule

When approximately 1cm of wax remains at the bottom of the container, use of the candle should be discontinued. If the wax level drops too far the bottom of the container can get extremely hot causing damage to both the container and the surface underneath.

Scent Intensity

Yankee fragrances are 'True to Life' and, just like the scents they replicate, their intensity can vary. If you are looking for a more intense or more subtle fragrance imagine it's natural counterpart, this will give you an idea of the strength of the fragrance.

The intensity of a fragrance can also be affected by the relationship between candle size and room size. For larger rooms or open plan spaces large jars and wax melt warmers have a wider wax pool and therefore a wider scent throw.

Loss of Scent

Due to repeated, prolonged exposure sometimes it is possible to become temproarily 'blind' to a particular fragrance. The best way to regain the sense of smell is to switch fragrances for a while, after this the smell should return.

When changing fragrances it may help to smell coffee beans inbetween each fragrance. This is a trick used by master perfumers throughout the ages to neutralise the sense of smell, allowing a better sense of the next fragrance.
